HISTORY OF COMMUNITY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

HISTORY OF THE PEOPLE'S CHURCH

Well, to go on with my story. After that purchase we carried on a domestic science class for mothers (thanks to our beloved John Patterson who gave us the equipment.), a club for boys, and a Mothers' club. We had already a -wonderful sewing school on Saturdays for the girls. They made clothes for themselves, trimmed their own hats, and learned to do many useful things.

When the cold winter days came I made my chimneys roar and hugged my walls tighter about the children to keep them warm, and just kept on loving them. Up to this time my new friends were mostly children, but now they began to bring their parents. I know one dear little boy who persisted until he got his parents, his grand-parents, and finally all the people in his house to come. I just looked at him and said: "A little child shall lead them."

There was one thing, however, that saddened me, and saddens me still; Sometimes a sorrowing group comes in my door, and a little coffin is carried in. Then I know that one of my friends has gone from me forever, and my old heart aches. I am glad though to open my arms for the burial services.

In about 1920 or 21 I heard them talking about a need for more room, and that an addition was going to be built on the rest of our lot. Let me tell you a secret. I was jealous of that new building at first for it claimed my girls and boys. I see it differently now, for we work together beautifully. I smile to myself as night after night I hear shouts of joy coming from the gymnasium, and know my children are having a good time with basketball games. Boy Scout activities, and all the other things.

I rather suspect from the number of socials and suppers going on that the big folks have grown to love us, too. I say us for in that room within my walls which once held a bar is now a chapel where is held regular Sunday meetings. I enjoy this so much that I am willing for my friend, the gym, to take care of the Community activities through the week.

Taking us all in all we are a very happy lot out here. I send my greetings to our guests tonight, and sign myself proudly:

THE FRIENDLY HOUSE
